HAL-9000-400pxFerrari has recently applied for patents, both in Europe and globally, which outline a system designed to make decisions on settings like traction control and stability assists using data gathered from a range of biometric sensors.

In the application Ferrari argues that “Drivers tend to miscalculate — in particular, overestimate — their driving skill and, more importantly, their psychophysical condition, with the result that driver-selected dynamic vehicle performance simply reflects the driver’s wish, as opposed to the driver’s actual psychophysical condition and proficiency.”

Apparently they plan to monitor a driver’s heart rate, blood pressure, blink rate, perspiration levels and even brain activity. There’s no official source, or even an indication of when this might be implemented, but if it does end up in production models, it could make for some interesting data logging, especially if Ferraris keep catching fire at their current rate.
