BMW-1M-burnout-400pxBMW has finally released the latest offering from M division, the 1M. Following the well established M sport M.O. of taking a good car and making it better, they’ve turned out a 1 series coupe that’s wider, lighter, more powerful and better finished than the standard 135i.

The flared bodywork houses 19in wheels, 9in wide in the front and a huge 10in at the rear, adding 80mm to the overall width. The alcantara and leather clad interior gives the cockpit a sporty flavour, and the three litre twin turbo straight six has had its output increased to 250kW and 450Nm of torque (500Nm when in overboost mode). 0- 100 arrives in 4.7 seconds, top speed is limited to 250km and a lap of the Nurburgring, where most of its development testing was done, comes in at 8:12, only a few seconds short of an E92 M3.

BMW say they’re hoping to attract a younger buyer with the 1M (presumably the ones who can’t quite afford an M3 yet), and the fact that it’s only available in a 6 speed manual suggests that they’re also are targeting the more serious driver market. Bring it on.
